Jailer accused of having sexual contact with prisoner

Altus, OK, May 29, 2013 -

Jackson County jailer Tonya Sue Brand, 41, of Altus, was booked into the Jackson County Jail Wednesday. She has been accused of having sexual contact with a prisoner. Brand was charged with felony counts of sodomy committed by a government employee and second-degree rape.

“She had developed a relationship with one of the prisoners,” said Jackson County Sheriff Roger Levick, “and when we investigated the matter and found out what was going on, we had no choice other than to turn the findings over the District Attorney and dismiss her immediately.”

According to the affidavit, Jail Administrator Ulysees Bridges III informed authorities that Brand may be having an inappropriate relationship. Documentation included a copy of a Facebook profile of the prisoner that was obviously taken in the jail’s library.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that over two hundred telephone calls had been made from the inmate to Brand. The content of these calls ranged from normal everyday conversation, to a loving conversation, to how to get a cell phone into the jail, to calls of a sexual nature, and sexual encounters the two of them had.

The affidavit said that two of the recorded calls got very detailed about what type of sexual encounters had transpired between Brand and the inmate, both sex acts in the janitorial supply room inside the jail while Brand was on duty. The affidavit states that the supply room is one of the few places within the jail that does not have a closed circuit video camera.

After being confronted with the information from the recorded phone calls, Brand was said to have admitted to kissing the inmate and later admitted to one of the sex acts, and stated, “I knew better.”

In a separate interview with the prisoner, he corroborated the information about the phone conversations and said that he and Brand were involved in a relationship for a few months, and that he and Brand did have two sexual encounters.

Brand has made her initial appearance in Jackson County District Court, and is free on a $1,500 cash bond. She faces up to 20 years in prison for the sodomy count, and up to 15 years for the rape count.
